Progress Energy changes name to Petronas Energy Canada

Progress Energy made official this week its name change to Petronas Energy Canada.

The change took effect Nov. 21 as the company solidifies its position in the North Montney ahead of the construction of LNG Canada in Kitimat.

The company has already changed its signs at its office and yard on the Airport Road in Fort St. John.

“Changing our name from Progress Energy to Petronas Canada is a reflection of our parent company’s commitment to Canada,” said Mark Fitzgerald, president and CEO.

“I am extremely proud to be part of this global company and am excited about the great future ahead as we drive innovations to provide clean Canadian energy to the world.”

Fitzgerald will be in Fort St. John on Tuesday, Nov. 27, to talk about the company’s development plans for the region.

Petronas is Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company founded in the 1970s. It purchased Progress Energy as its Canadian subsidiary in 2012 as it planned its now defunct Pacific NorthWest LNG project for Prince Rupert.

In May, Petronas took a 25% stake in the LNG Canada project led by Shell.
